Life of the Ganges

In Varanasi, I was fascinated by daily life on the banks of the River Ganges. I never grew tired of going there!
Early every morning the women came down the steps to pray inside the river, here they washed, fished, and chatted amongst themselves. They all carried washing baskets full of multicolored clothes which they washed and dried on the steps.

I´m attracted by the elegance of the women of India. A seven meter length of cloth is enough to wrap around the body and allow them to move delicately and fluidly while covering their faces when they feel shy or they want to see but not be seen. What surprises me is their ability to wear a sari and yet still be able to perform everyday tasks without losing an ounce of grace.

The days I passed in the Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat were unforgettable and I can still vividly remember everything I felt and saw. I spent my days walking around the villages and appreciating the houses and gardens where the people lived their lives.

In this part of India (Chattisgarth) the villages are brightly painted and the colors combine with the strong vibrant colors of the women´s dresses to create a genuine feast for the eyes

Prayer in the river Ganges

Every morning the citizens of Varanasi go down to the River Ganges to pray. Here, a young woman after carefully laying out her belongings and with a profound sense of respect, bends down to fill a vase with water before rising to her feet and after saying a silent prayer raises her arms to offer the sacred water to God.

While staying in Cochin on the Kerala coast in the south of India I decided to visit a tea plantation high in the mountains. During the journey I passed through the town of Pala where the road was blocked by a procession of local women dressed in beautiful and multicolored saris, fascinated by the scene I immediately got out of the car to see what was happening. I had stumbled across the fiesta of Saint Joseph where traditional Indian culture combines with the customs and practices of the Catholic faith.

The Ganges river is a hub of activity and tradition, while some people go only to pray others wash their clothes and bathe. This woman immersed herself in the water and after removing and wetting her sari she placed it over her shoulders then with great dignity and elegance began to pray.

After visiting a temple in Udaipur in Rajasthan a beggar woman walked up to me with her baby in her arms. I was spellbound by the beautiful veils wrapped around them. What really fascinated me was the moment when she turned to leave. I still remember it as if it was yesterday!

I have been invited to a celebration of the birth of a child. The party is taking place in the back yard of a house and the men are sitting on the floor cutting up the vegetables. The children are sitting on the floor in a line and the women are serving the food in giant cabbage leaves. In the corner I can see a girl deep in thought wrapped in a multicolored cloth, I can ́t stop looking at her. I wonder what she is thinking about?

After my first visit to India to see the most famous palaces and forts and getting to experience the most romantic and regal parts of the country I decided to return and see the real India. I chose Chhattisgarh state located in the center of the country. There I was surprised to find a beautiful girl herding a flock 0f sheep and girls and women working in a quarry carrying rocks on their heads.

One day while walking through the market I saw a woman from the adivasi tribe (which in hindi means “original inhabitants”) whose head and legs were decorated with simple tattoos.
