In Finland, there is a popular sami legend that attributes the phenomenon of the Northern Lights to a magical fox running across the Arctic fells. As it runs the foxes tail brushes against the snow sending a trail of green and yellow sparks up into the sky. But for me it is the shapes and colours of the lights that fascinate and I imagine the foxes tail flashing across the night sky leaving the lights in its wake.

Waiting for the arrival of the northern lights at times feels like a never ending task, patience and curiosity are the keys to success but in temperatures below -20 degrees it is much more difficult than I imagined. Hands and feet become cold and numb but the excitement of the unknown keeps me outside even when an icy wind starts to blow. Suddenly the northern lights begin with a long, thin ribbon of pale green light that covers the horizon from east to west.The lights are formed from a variety of shapes, structures and colours that change constantly as they pass over the night sky.
Once in my studio it is as if I can hear the music of the colours in my mind and I allow my hand to dance across the canvas to the rhythm.

At midnight I am waiting with impatience for the appearance of the great coloured nebulae, when suddenly I see threads of light moving across the sky that capture my attention immediately. The desire to preserve these new shapes, so different from what I had seen before in my mind, prevent me from appreciating the rest of the night sky in all its splendor and magnitude.

Every time I look at this painting I feel the cold of that night and this is something I have tried to express with the colours. It was a dark night, very dark. The beauty of the stars that were scattered across the sky created the perfect backdrop for a marvelous display of blue and green that flashed acrossed the night sky.
